Good morning,

At the risk of sounding partisan, let us discuss one aspect of Deputy President William Ruto’s Hustler Nation narrative that makes a lot of sense.

Politicians opposed to this school of thought have termed it as backward thinking and glorification of poverty, but perhaps we are missing the DP’s point.

As Africans, we are taught, both at home and school, to become self-reliant adults.

We are also taught that nothing in life comes easy, so we have adapted to the “it is always darkest before sunrise” ideology.

The aspect of hustling that DP Ruto and his brigade should sell the most, if they want to sail through 2022 on the poor wananchi’s votes, is the promise of success after hard work, in other words, enjoying the fruits of their labor.

If you award me a wheelbarrow, how will the tool help me advance in the short term and the long term?

Remember in Kenya, we have a lot of practical business skills, but almost zero creativity.

So the DP should not just be dishing out wheelbarrows, he should also hold empowerment sessions to teach the recipients how to turn the wheelbarrows into the luxury vehicles and aircraft his team cruises in.

The Hustler Nation card was the right one for the DP to play, in a country full of economically struggling voters, and if a little more salt is sprinkled on the crusade, the new money gang stands a fighting chance against our other leaders, who were born with a silver spoon in their mouth.

Here are the stories making headlines on Opera News today:

DP Ruto being ‘driven’ in a Wheelbarrow. He is believed to be behind the newly formed UDA Party.
